I am writing a book on the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976, putting that radical movement in a global context and considering its impact on China today. Another project looks at the aesthetic implications of China's rise to power. Chinese leaders believe the world ought to show increasing respect for Chinese culture, and are somewhat frustrated when this does not happen. This project examines China's cultural diplomacy, the international trade in arts objects, and struggles over the right to define "authentic" Chinese culture for the world.
